Local Resident Joan Shields Earns
Award for Scholarly Achievement
Port Washington resident Joan E. Shields, a professor
of chemistry at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in
Brookville, NY, has been awarded the 2004 Trustees Award for Scholarly
Achievement (TASA). Since 1978, the trustees of Long Island University
have recognized faculty from the Universitys three main campuses
for either an outstanding single scholarly achievement or a body
of work accomplished during a lifetime.
Dr. Shields completed her B.A. in chemistry at Regis
College, her M.S. in chemistry at Tufts University, and her Ph.D.
in chemistry from Boston College. An organic chemist by training,
she was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship at the Max Planck Institute
in Mulheim, Germany, after completion of her graduate studies. She
joined the faculty of Long Island University in 1968 as Assistant
Professor of Chemistry in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
at the C.W. Post Campus, where she has held the rank of full professor
since 1974, and is presently chair of the Department of Chemistry.
In addition to authoring more than 30 publications in her field,
including nine monographs and reviews, Dr. Shields is active in
several scientific societies. She recently served as chair of the
Board of Directors of the American Chemical Society. She has also
been a member of the Board of Directors of the Chemical Heritage
Foundation, as well as chair of its Finance Committee. Dr. Shields
currently serves on the Governing Board for Publishing of the American
Chemical Society.
The process of selection calls for TASA committees
on each Long Island University campus (Brooklyn, Southampton and
C.W. Post) to review the scholarly work of each nominee. The nominations
are then sent to a jury of distinguished scholars and/or artists
(external to the University) to make the final awards selection.
The jury members are asked to individually and collectively review
the materials submitted by the nominees, and to select one award
recipient from each campus.
