Local Resident Eugene Goldin Receives
Award for Excellence in Teaching
Port Washington resident Eugene Goldin, an Associate
Professor of Education in the Department of Counseling and Development
at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville,
NY, has been selected as a recipient of the 2004 David Newton Excellence
in Teaching Award.
The David Newton Excellence in Teaching Awards were
first offered in 1988 after a generous endowment in the name of
Dr. David Newton, former vice chancellor of Long Island University
and the ground-breaking educational leader who introduced open admissions
to New York City colleges back in 1969.
Recipients of the annual Newton Teaching Awards are
honored at a special ceremony where they receive a cash award plus
a glass "apple" engraved with their name. Academic departments
at each of Long Island Universitys six campuses may nominate
one or more candidates for the award with careful consideration
of the following criteria: presentation, attitude, expectations
of students, and professional development and knowledge. This year,
Newton awards were presented to seven Long Island University professors.
Dr. Goldin completed his doctorate in counseling at
St. Johns University and began teaching at C.W. Post in 1994
after a 20-year career as a professional counselor in college counseling
and administration. A former director of counseling at New York
Institute of Technology, he has had extensive training in a variety
of counseling modalities, including hypnosis and family therapy.
After completing the clinical externship in family therapy at the
Ackeman Institute for the Family in 1991, Dr. Goldin was invited
to join the institutes Later Life-Cycle Project.
Dr. Goldin has published on a wide variety of professional
refereed counseling journals, including the Journal of Counseling
and Development, Counselor Education and Supervision, Family Counseling:
Therapy and Counseling for Families, among others. His publications
have covered such diverse topics as the use of humor in counseling,
sex therapy, and the status of school counseling in America. In
addition, he has served as the editor of the Journal for the Professional
Counselor, which won the Best Branch Journal Award from the American
Counseling Association during each year of his editorship.
Dr. Goldin is a member of several editorial boards
and serves on a variety of professional boards. At C.W. Post, Dr.
Goldin has served on numerous college-wide committees, including
the School of Educations Doctoral committee. He has also developed
or co-developed several courses while at C.W. Post.
"Dr. Goldin has consistently brought his enthusiasm
and experience for the profession of counseling to his classes at
C.W. Post," said Dr. Robert Manheimer, dean of the School of
Education. "This is evident by the consistently high marks
that he has achieved on both student and administrative evaluations.
We are proud to honor Dr. Goldin this year for his exceptional teaching
skills and dedication to his discipline."
Dr. Goldin holds a B.A. from Hofstra University; an
M.S. and M.S.Ed. from Queens College, City University of New York;
and an Ed.D. from St. John's University.
