Local Resident Eugene Goldin Receives Award for Excellence in Teaching

Port Washington resident Eugene Goldin, an Associate Professor of Education in the Department of Counseling and Development at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, NY, has been selected as a recipient of the 2004 David Newton Excellence in Teaching Award.

The David Newton Excellence in Teaching Awards were first offered in 1988 after a generous endowment in the name of Dr. David Newton, former vice chancellor of Long Island University and the ground-breaking educational leader who introduced open admissions to New York City colleges back in 1969.

Recipients of the annual Newton Teaching Awards are honored at a special ceremony where they receive a cash award plus a glass "apple" engraved with their name. Academic departments at each of Long Island University’s six campuses may nominate one or more candidates for the award with careful consideration of the following criteria: presentation, attitude, expectations of students, and professional development and knowledge. This year, Newton awards were presented to seven Long Island University professors.

Dr. Goldin completed his doctorate in counseling at St. John’s University and began teaching at C.W. Post in 1994 after a 20-year career as a professional counselor in college counseling and administration. A former director of counseling at New York Institute of Technology, he has had extensive training in a variety of counseling modalities, including hypnosis and family therapy. After completing the clinical externship in family therapy at the Ackeman Institute for the Family in 1991, Dr. Goldin was invited to join the institute’s Later Life-Cycle Project.

Dr. Goldin has published on a wide variety of professional refereed counseling journals, including the Journal of Counseling and Development, Counselor Education and Supervision, Family Counseling: Therapy and Counseling for Families, among others. His publications have covered such diverse topics as the use of humor in counseling, sex therapy, and the status of school counseling in America. In addition, he has served as the editor of the Journal for the Professional Counselor, which won the Best Branch Journal Award from the American Counseling Association during each year of his editorship.

Dr. Goldin is a member of several editorial boards and serves on a variety of professional boards. At C.W. Post, Dr. Goldin has served on numerous college-wide committees, including the School of Education’s Doctoral committee. He has also developed or co-developed several courses while at C.W. Post.

"Dr. Goldin has consistently brought his enthusiasm and experience for the profession of counseling to his classes at C.W. Post," said Dr. Robert Manheimer, dean of the School of Education. "This is evident by the consistently high marks that he has achieved on both student and administrative evaluations. We are proud to honor Dr. Goldin this year for his exceptional teaching skills and dedication to his discipline."

Dr. Goldin holds a B.A. from Hofstra University; an M.S. and M.S.Ed. from Queens College, City University of New York; and an Ed.D. from St. John's University.
