"A Celebration of Joyful Learning"

On Wednesday, May 26, 2004, approximately 300 students from schools from East Hampton to East Harlem gathered at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, New York, for the 13th annual Electronic Educational Village (EEV) spring celebration.

The EEV is an innovative grassroots learning community, and its annual spring event is an opportunity for students, academics, community and business partners to lead one another in interactive learning sessions that are both enjoyable and meaningful. Many of the projects employ technology tools for communications, presentation, and design.

Highlights of the day included a world peace flag ceremony with a representative of the U.N.; music performed by Westbury kindergarten and first grade students and by the Westbury High School Select Choir; creation of E-books by second and third grade students; a virtual field trip to Yellowstone National Park; creation of a "Virtual Quilt;" DNA Workshops, from DNA Extractions to DNA Origami; creation of electronic music; the integration of poetry & PowerPoint; and songs on guitar by Westbury School District photographer teacher Dennis Cleasby.

The Electronic Educational Village was created in 1991 by C.W. Post’s Department of Educational Technology to help children learn in an environment that integrates technology, community resources, the Internet and hands-on learning. Participants attend workshops, take educational field trips, and use the Internet to share information. The EEV is supported in part by Long Island University and the Half Hollow Hills School District. The EEV has been fortunate to receive support over the years from NYNEX, the NEC Foundation of America, Verizon and from New York State. The EEV is archived in the Smithsonian Institution as part of its Innovation Network in its Permanent Research Archive. In 2002, the EEV collaboration "Keep the Heat" received the top award in a national science-based competition hosted by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
