Smithtown Resident Honored for 30 Years of Service to C.W. Post
Smithtown resident Steven D. Hollander, an Associate Professor in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Movement Science at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, was recognized recently for 30 years of service as a distinguished professor in the School of Education.
Dr. Hollander has spent the past three decades of his career teaching courses ranging from substance abuse and consumer health to methods and materials of health education.
A 1993 recipient of the Long Island University David Newton Award for Excellence in Teaching and the C.W. Post Educator of the Year Award, he also has served as chair of the Faculty-Student Appeals Board. In addition, Dr. Hollander has sat on the Chancellor¹s University Task Force of Health and Fitness and was an active member of the HEOP/MLK Advisory Board for three years. During his tenure, he has played a vital role in developing a broad range of workshops and academic programs, as well as an integrated student-teaching model for the School of Education. He also has served as co-chair of the Department of Health, Physical Education and Movement Science and is a member of the Curriculum Committee.
In addition to his teaching and administrative responsibilities at C.W. Post, Dr. Hollander is also a gifted public speaker who makes health education presentations across Long Island, addressing such topics as AIDS education and substance abuse. He is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, and the New York State Federation for Professional Health Educators. Prior to his employment at C.W. Post, Dr. Hollander taught at Nassau Community College and at Brooklyn College.
He holds a B.S. and an M.S. in health and physical education from Brooklyn College and an Ed.D. in health education from Columbia University.
