CONFRONTATION

Dr. Martin Tucker, faculty emeritus at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, has had a major influence on CONFRONTATION magazine, the literary journal of Long Island University, since its inception in 1968 and has served as the publication’s editor-in-chief since 1970. He has written two collections of poetry, “Attention Spans” and “Homes of Locks and Mysteries.”  His literary criticisms include, “Sam Shepard,” “Joseph Conrad,” and “Africa in Modern Literature.” Another criticism, “Literary Exile in the Twentieth Century,” is widely praised and has become a standard text in the field of exile literature. Dr. Tucker is also the editor of more than twenty volumes of literary encyclopedias, among them, “A Library of Literary Criticism: Modern British Literature,” “Modern American Literature,” “Commonwealth Literature,” and the five volume “The Critical Temper.” He has penned essays and reviews that appeared in, among others, The New York Times Book Review, The Nation, The New Republic, Saturday Review, Commonwealth, and Chicago Review. He has served on the executive board of the Pen American Center for more than 20 years and was on the Governing Board of the Poetry Society of America for two terms.

Dr. Tucker graduated Phi Beta Kappa from New York University with a BA degree in 1949, received an MA degree from the University of Arizona (Tucson) in 1954 and received a Ph.D. from NYU in 1963.  While an undergraduate at NYU he was managing editor of the college newspaper and associate editor of the literary magazine, where he published stories in the same issue with Joseph Heller, Alvin Toffler, Cynthia Ozick and Alfred Chester. Dr. Tucker was the recipient of Distinguished Service Award from NYU in the mid-1980s, the highest award for alumni there. He served as President of the NYU Graduate School Alumni Association for four years and the Executive Board of the NYU Alumni Federation for over five years.

Dr. Tucker is the recipient of two national awards for distinguished editorial achievement – one from the National Endowment for Arts, the other from the Coordinating Council of Literary Magazines – and received the Trustees Award for Scholarly Achievement from Long Island University in 1980.
