August 26, 2005 – Hillwood Art Museum will present Disarming Images: Picturing Dissent in the United States September 6 – November 5, 2005. An exhibition prepared by Artists Against the War, Disarming Images is a compilation of powerful visual material opposing the war in Iraq. It is a multi-faceted media installation, incorporating DVDs, large format prints, and an installation of protest posters. The Disarming Images DVD consists of activist projects and political documentaries, from images of signs seen at mass protests and large-scale projections of still images interspersed with video. Included are Paul Chan’s Baghdad Snapshot Action – street posters based on everyday photos of Iraqi people – and Eyes Wide Open, video of an exhibit that features hundreds of military boots representing lost soldiers, which was first installed in the Judson Church in New York City in September 2004 before it began traveling across the United States.
Disarming Images displays the vitality of the grass roots anti-war movement: the readings and performances; the public installations; street and web art; billboards and murals; photographs and films – a mix of alternative, cutting edge and traditional media.
The Opening Reception for Disarming Images will take place on Thursday, September 15, from 5 to 8 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
On Thursday October 27 at 7 p.m., speaker Peter Moriarty will present a lecture titled “The Urge for Going: A Survey of Dissident Photographs.” The work of Tina Modotti, Eugene Smith, Susan Meiselas and others will be discussed.
