October 28, 2005 – Brookville, NY – Post Theatre Company, the not-for-profit resident theatre company of the Department of Theatre, Film and Dance on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, presents its production of Frank Canino’s The Angelina Project. The performances, directed by Post Theatre Company Alumnus Brian Lady, will run from November 10-13 and November 16-20. Performance time is 8 p.m. except for Sunday performances, which begin at 3 p.m. The production will be staged on C.W. Post's Little Theatre Mainstage.
“On the afternoon of Easter Sunday, 16 April 1911, Angelina Napolitano, a twenty-eight-year old Italian mother of four, killed her husband with an ax as he lay asleep in the bedroom of the quarters they rented in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.”
“Murder, Womanly Virtue and Motherhood:
The Case of Angelina Napolitano 1911-1922”
The Angelina Project is based on the historical event described above. The play is both the story of Angelina and her struggles, and the story of her fictional modern ancestors and how their family history has affected each generation thereafter. The production touches on ethnicity, ancestry, human nature, learned behaviors and environmental factors. The playwright examines the ways in which all of these elements may have contributed to and shaped the lives of Angelina’s children and grandchildren.
Frank Canino, the playwright, will be visiting the campus to attend the production and lead a masterclass with the cast and interested theatre majors. He will discuss the process of adapting a true story for the stage, and the challenges of producing an original play.
Since graduating from C.W. Post in 2003, director Brian Lady has worked in numerous capacities on various projects in New York City and elsewhere. His most recent was Ennobling Nonna with Maria Porter, his collaborator and fellow founder of the LTC Group, a theatre research collaborative. College highlights include: A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Puck/Philostrate), Cloud Nine (Betty/Gerry), The Iphigenia Defense (Dramaturge, Assistant Director), Sarah Kane’s Crave (Director), and Unearthing Lilith (Director), for which he was invited to the Kennedy Center.
Tickets for performances of the Angelina Project are $10 for the general public, and $5 for students and seniors, general admission seating. All ticket revenue goes to a scholarship fund for theatre students at C.W. Post. C.W.
