Sen. Michael Balboni Honored by C.W. Post Clinical Lab Science Program
Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Recognized for Efforts to Protect and Professionalize Laboratory Practice

January 20, 2005 - The Clinical Laboratory Science Program at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University recently honored New York State Senator Michael Balboni for sponsoring the Clinical Technology Practice Act, a law designed to elevate the professional standards of clinical laboratory personnel and safeguard the health and safety of the public through a license recognized by the New York State Department of Education.

Legislation sponsored by Balboni would guarantee the highest standard of practice for clinical laboratory technologists by defining scope of practice and educational standards. The bill has been passed by the Senate and Assembly and awaits the governor's signature.

"This measure will ensure the highest quality of patient testing and bring long-deserved professional status to clinical laboratory technologists in New York State," said Angela Meisse of East Meadow and director of the Clinical Laboratory Sciences Program at C.W. Post. "We're grateful to Senator Balboni for his leadership."

"Clinical laboratory technologists play a vital role in health care," Balboni said. "I'm proud to support them in their effort to set high professional standards."

The Department of Biomedical Sciences of the School of Health Professions and Nursing at C.W. Post offers a bachelor of science degree in clinical laboratory science, which is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences, as well as a master of science degree in clinical laboratory management.

The C.W. Post Campus's Clinical Laboratory Sciences Advisory Board presented a plaque to Sen. Balboni during the board's Jan. 13, 2005 meeting.

Senator Balboni represents the 7th Senate District in Nassau County, which encompasses the entire town of North Hempstead and includes the communities of Elmont, Floral Park, South Floral Park, Stewart Manor, Bellerose, Franklin Square, and part of Hicksville.
