Manhattan Resident Honored for 30 Years of Service to C.W. Post
May 20, 2005 - Ellen M. Duffy, a professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, was recognized for 30 years of service at the campus’s 47th annual commencement exercises on May 8, 2004.
Dr. Duffy is a distinguished professor in the School of Health Professions and Nursing who has taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses ranging from immunology and virology to cancer research and biostatistics. Dr. Duffy has also served the C.W. Post Campus as an Associate Dean of the School in which she teaches from 1986 to 1998. She was an active participant in the Teaching and Learning Initiative and was a Teaching and Learning Fellow at C.W. Post (2001).
During her initial years on campus, she conducted research in virology by studying viral genomes and extended her endeavors to transplantation biology as a research fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, N.Y. This affiliation also allowed her students at C.W. Post to benefit from state-of-the-art research activities. Her research currently utilizes computerized grouped data to determine the relative importance of factors in the prognosis of breast and ovarian cancers.
Dr. Duffy is an authority on the role of technology in health care. Her knowledge of artificial intelligence and database design and management are integral to her current research, which utilizes database information to analyze prognostic factors in breast cancer. She keeps up-to-date on computer software and maintains an active website that students utilize for their courses. She has completed courses on Artificial Intelligence, and Database Design at SUNY Stony Brook and Software Design, Programming with C++ and Database Management at C.W. Post.
Prior to her career at Long Island University, Dr. Duffy received her Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Sciences from Cornell University, her M.S. degree in Chemistry from Catholic University and her B.A. degree in Chemistry from Manhattanville College.
