C.W. Post Honors Huntington Resident for 40 Years of Service

May 20, 2005 - Dr.Donald Gelman, a physics professor at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, was honored for 40 years of service at the campus’s 47th annual commencement exercises on May 8, 2005.

As chairman of the Department of Physics, a position he has held since 1980, Donald Gelman leads one of the most rigorous programs of study at C.W. Post. Dr. Gelman joined the Campus’ faculty as an instructor of physics in September of 1964, just three months after receiving a master of science in physics from New York University. Within five years he earned a doctorate in physics from NYU, and he became an assistant professor. He attained the title of associate professor in 1973 and has been a full professor of physics since 1992.

Dr. Gelman has taught physics and mathematics courses ranging from Introductory Astronomy to Nuclear Physics to Calculus for Business and Social Science. His areas of research include variational bounds, scattering theory and astronomy education. He is affiliated with the American Physical Society, the American Association of Physics Teachers, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Society of Sigma Xi.

Dr. Gelman was director of the Office of Student Academic Standing from 1972 to 1980, a period in which that office grew rapidly. He serves on five personnel committees.

The author of “Introduction to the Solar System” and “Stellar Astronomy Laboratory Manual and Text,” Dr. Gelman has written or assisted with the manuscripts of several other books, including “Permutations: Readings in Science and Literature,” edited by C.W. Post Professors Joan Digby and Bob Brier. Dr. Gelman also has presented a number of scientific papers.

Dr. Gelman is a long-time resident of Huntington.
