C.W. Post Professor Honored by National Kidney Foundation

June 24, 2005 — Brookville, NY — Jerrilynn D. Burrowes, Ph.D., R.D., C.D.N., Assistant Professor in the Department of Nutrition at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, was awarded the Joel D. Kopple Award at the National Kidney Foundation’s 2005 Clinical Meeting on May 5.

In addition to receiving the award at the annual meeting, Dr. Burrowes gave a presentation titled “Maximizing Your Value,” which discussed ways dietitians can increase their professional growth by acquiring more education, networking and joining professional organizations.

The Joel D. Kopple Award is given annually by the NKF to an individual who has made significant contributions in the field of renal nutrition. Kopple, a pioneer nephrologist at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA, is a leader in the fields of nutrition and kidney disease. This is the highest honor bestowed by the NKF to a renal dietitian. “It means so much to be recognized by my peers and colleagues,” Dr. Burrowes said. “I know Joel Kopple well and to receive an award in his name is an honor.”

Dr. Burrowes received a B.A. in pre-medicine/biology from Fisk University in Nashville, TN. She earned an M.S. in foods, nutrition and dietetics and a Ph.D. from New York University.

Before obtaining her doctorate, Dr. Burrowes was the research coordinator for the NIH-funded Hemodialysis (HEMO) study at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City. Her research interests are in the area of adult dialysis. Her specific interests are appetite and its effect on outcome, nutrition in geriatric dialysis patients, and the influence of culture and ethnicity on dietary adherence. She has published numerous papers and has been an invited speaker at more than 50 national and international professional meetings.

Dr. Burrowes is currently the Nutrition Section Editor for Advances in Chronic Kidney Disease; she is also a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Renal Nutrition and the NKF Kidney Learning System. In 1998, she received the Recognized Renal Dietitian Award from the NKF Council on Renal Nutrition (CRN). Dr. Burrowes has served on a variety of committees. These include the NKF-K/DOQI Advisory Board (2000-2004), and the Nutrition Work Group (1996-2004); Program Chair for the NKF-CRN Ninth Annual Clinical Nephrology meeting (2000); and Chair of the CRN of Greater New York and New Jersey (1995-1997).
