Remembering 9/11, Considering Our Freedom
Upcoming C.W. Post forums observe Sept. 11 anniversary, Constitution Day

Brookville, N.Y. -- With its mission to engage students in thoughtful discussions about topical and compelling issues, the new Student Affairs-Faculty Partnership Initiative Committee (SAFPIC) at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University will host two upcoming programs focused on some of the most talked-about topics today.

The SAFPIC, which has C.W. Post faculty, administrators and students working together to develop lectures and forums that heighten students' awareness of the world around them, is sponsoring “A Time to Remember” on Sept. 11 to mark the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks, and “We the People,” on Sept. 20, a Constitution-themed panel discussion.

“We are committed to elevating the culture of intellectual inquiry on campus by inviting students and faculty to discuss topics that matter, such as how terrorism plagues the world and how nations must find a balance between civil rights and their citizens' safety,” said Dr. Sherri N. Coe-Perkins, associate provost for student affairs. "Ultimately, we hope to prepare students to be meaningful, informed and caring members of their communities after C.W. Post.”

During "A Time to Remember," the names of C.W. Post victims will be read and personal reflections will be offered by members of the C.W. Post community. The event will also feature musical tributes, audience comments and guest speakers.

Additionally, the film “United 93,” which recounts the events of the September 11 plane crash in Pennsylvania, will have two showings—2 p.m. and 6 p.m.--in the Hillwood Commons Cinema.

SAFPIC will lead C.W. Post's recognition of Constitution Day, a 10-year national effort to make the Constitution better known and better understood. "We the People" will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Top of the Commons and feature a faculty panel exploring common misunderstandings about the Constitution, the Patriot Act, free speech and the right to dissent, and U.S.-international policy.

Speakers include Leo Callaghan of Long Island University's Homeland Security Management Institute, School of Education Associate Dean Michael Hogan, Political Science Assistant Professor Jeremy Buchman, and History Assistant Professor Neal Rosendorf.

SAFPIC is a core group of almost 40 faculty, deans, student affairs’ educators and students interested in expanding learning experiences beyond the formal classroom. For further information about SAFPIC, contact Dr. Coe-Perkins at 516-299-2255 or via email at sherri.coe-perkins@liu.edu.
