Dr. Scott Carlin to Speak about East End Development

Long Island environmentalist Dr. Scott Carlin, a geography professor at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, and will participate in a panel discussion on how to manage increasing suburban development on Monday, September 18, 2006.

The event, "The Future of the East End," is sponsored by the Peconic Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and is the group's annual lecture on architecture and the environment. The aim is to examine how the settlement pattern can be managed to avoid sprawl, create livable communities, and preserve and enhance the diverse landscape of the region. Dr. Carlin is expected to join the panel from 2-5 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Main Street, Riverhead.

Dr. Carlin earned his M.A. and Ph.D. from Clark University and his B.A. from Brandeis University. Prior to joining the C.W. Post faculty in 2005 as an associate professor, Dr. Carlin taught at the Southampton campus for 12 years. He served as co-director of the Institute for Sustainable Development at Long Island University from 1999-2005, and helped lead the research and education project as it explored community and environmental sustainability projects on Long Island. He has also written several reports on the subject, with an article appearing last month in Newsday, and has contributed to key environmental reports on breast cancer.

He serves as a board member with the Suffolk County Transportation Advisory Board, the Hampton Bays Water District Community Advisory Board and Prevention is the Cure, Inc. He also organized conferences on the future of traffic and the creation of new initiatives for land use, both focused on the East End.
