Art, Music & Exhibits Featured in Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration at C.W. Post Library

Brookville, N.Y. – Original paintings, live music and a timely lecture on the changing face of Latino immigration highlight the celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month at the B. Davis Schwartz Memorial Library on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. All events are free and open to the public.

Dr. Sherrie Baver will speak on “Ciudad y Suburbia: The Changing Nature of Latino Immigration” at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10 in the Hutchins Gallery on the lower level of the library. Baver is the director of the Latin American and Caribbean Studies program at City College of New York. Her talk is sponsored by the New York Council for the Humanities Speakers in the Humanities program.

Celebrated musicians and C.W. Post Professors Harris Becker and Barbara Fusco will perform works by Hispanic composers at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11 in the lobby of the library. Becker, the director of guitar studies at C.W. Post and founder of the Long Island Guitar Festival, has performed internationally and been a faculty member at Queens College and the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich. Fusco, a solo vocalist and C.W. Post graduate, has performed locally and internationally with opera companies and orchestras and appears on numerous recordings.

“Meridians: Dreamscapes from Latin America,” an exhibit of original paintings by well-known artists, including Humberto Aquino of  Peru, Rigo Peralta of the Dominican Republic, Jorge Ivan Posada and Francisco Vidal of Colombia and Vincente Zambrano of Equador, will run through Friday, Oct. 27 in the Hutchins Gallery. This exhibit is curated by C.W. Post graduate student Dolores Contreras. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m.

Latin American music and musicians, including Celia Cruz, Ruben Blades, Rita Moreno, Selena, Tito Puente, and others, will be highlighted in an exhibit in the lobby of the library through Friday, Oct. 27. Also on display will be Latin American artistic and literary works from the Julia De Burgos Latino Cultural Center, in collaboration with the National Association of Women for the Arts.

The library lobby is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from non to 8 p.m. The C.W. Post Campus is located at 720 Northern Boulevard in Brookville. For more information, call (516) 299-2868.
