C.W. Post Students Pledge Social and Environmental Responsibility

New Green and Gold Pledge signifies a commitment in the home,
the work place and the community

March 9, 2006 – Brookville, N.Y. – Graduates of the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University will have the opportunity at Commencement this spring to commit to social and environmental responsibility upon graduation.

The Green and Gold Pledge is a promise to be mindful of the implications of one’s career and lifestyle choices on society and the environment. It states: “As a graduate of Long Island University, I pledge to be attentive to the social and environmental consequences of my actions and to improve these aspects in my home, work and community.”

Students may sign the pledge when filing for graduation with their academic advisors. Those who have signed the pledge will be given green ribbons to wear at C.W. Post’s Commencement exercises on Sunday, May 14, 2006.

The Green and Gold Pledge, named for the school colors, is C.W. Post’s version of the Graduation Pledge of Social and Environmental Responsibility, which began at Humboldt State University in 1987 and has since been instituted at more than 100 campuses across the nation.

Long Island University’s pledge of social and environmental responsibility began at Southampton College. The college’s undergraduate degree programs were transferred to the C.W. Post Campus in September 2005. The Class of 2006 will be the first at C.W. Post to have the opportunity to take the pledge.

“Students decide for themselves how to accept social and environmental responsibility,” said Dr. Sherri Coe-Perkins, associate provost for student affairs, who spearheaded the launch of the pledge at C.W. Post along with Dr. Scott Carlin, professor of earth and environmental science.

Examples could include joining civic organizations that support social justice; offering one’s time and talent in community service activities; advocating for diversity through professional associations; accepting a position from a particular firm because of its good environmental record; using environment-friendly products in the home or patronizing businesses known for fair treatment of employees.
