Psychologist was ranked in the top 10 of best jobs in America, according to a survey by MONEY Magazine released in April 2006. Jobs in this field are expected to grow by 10 percent over the next decade, and average pay is more than $66,500 a year.
The field of psychology landed one of the top spots based on job satisfaction, creativity, advancement within the field, and flexible hours. The survey also noted that school psychology is a fast-growing specialty.
Graduates of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University are poised to join these thriving careers.
The College offers degree programs in psychology at every level of the collegiate experience: a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and the coveted doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology. The C.W. Post Department of Psychology provides numerous undergraduate and graduate courses encompassing child and adult psychology, abnormal behavior, applied behavior analysis, psychotherapy and psychological testing. Students are prepared to deal effectively with many groups of people by helping them work through problems, manage stress and foster personal growth.
In addition to classroom studies, they can gain hands-on experience by taking practicum courses that may involve placements at community youth centers, local hospitals, human resource departments or private schools for developmentally disabled children. C.W. Post faculty’s expertise spans many applied areas such as marriage and family, applied behavior analysis, developmental disabilities, child and adolescent behavior and psychotherapy, as well as research areas such as learning and memory, neuroscience, and cognition and perception.

B.A. in Psychology
The Bachelor of Arts program in Psychology is one of the most flexible majors you can choose. It can be applied to almost any area of work, including social services, law, human resources, business and government. Elective courses will introduce you to forensic psychology, psychosomatics, neuroscience and critical thinking.
B.S. in Psychology
If you envision yourself as a clinical counselor or psychological researcher, the Bachelor of Science program will give you the foundation needed to achieve your goals. This course of study reflects a greater concentration on the sciences and mathematics. Electives include learning and memory, applied behavior analysis, psychopharmacology, cognition and perception and the psychology of gender.
B.S. in Early Childhood (Birth-Grade 2) or Childhood Education (Grades 1-6):
Psychology Concentration
Students majoring in Early Childhood or Childhood Education often find it useful to take their liberal arts courses in Psychology. Electives such as human behavior or childhood growth and development can be invaluable for an educator.

The Master of Arts program in Experimental Psychology will prepare you for admission to doctoral programs upon graduation or to enter the workforce. Experimental psychologists practice in many areas, including counseling, industrial or sports psychology and research.
Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology
C.W. Post’s Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program is among the most competitive and elite in the nation. Accredited by the American Psychological Association, the program is ideal preparation for those seeking to apply psychological knowledge to help troubled individuals. Students specialize in the areas of family violence, developmental disabilities, or serious and persistent mental illness. Because the program admits a limited number of students, participants have the opportunity to work one-to-one with clients in C.W. Post’s professional public clinic, the Psychological Services Center.
Advanced Certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis
This graduate program provides a formal background in the theory and practice of Applied Behavior Analysis. Behavior analysis is used most widely in the area of developmental disabilities, including mentally retarded or autistic clients. Course work includes a foundation in behavior analysis and learning in addition to experimental methods in psychology.
