Post Theatre Company Presents Third Child Revisited
The New York International Fringe Festival -FringeNYC, a production of The Present Company
Showing at the Linhart Theater, 440 Lafayette Street, N.Y. from August 10-26
The Post Theatre Company, of the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in will present the Suzuki-based Third Child: Orestes Revisited, a movement theatre piece, as part of the 11th annual New York International Fringe Festival-FringeNYC at the Linhart Theater in New York City.
Inspired by the myth of Orestes, Third Child: Orestes Revisitedexplores the relationship between one’s responsibility to God, country and self. Sent into exile as a young child, Orestes is compelled by the oracle at Delphi to return to his homeland and take his mother’s life. What is his responsibility to destiny? How is this revealed? What extremes must he be driven to realize his place in the universe? The forces of God, justice and country serve to both confound and inspire the creation of a man who thinks he understands the consequences of his actions, fears those consequences, butis powerless to stop.
A rich collaboration between director, actors and designers, Third Child: Orestes Revisited is presented as spoken text that is derived from the actors’ own experiences working on the performance, and from adaptations of The Oresteia and Elektra. The physical narrative of the show relies on the heightened physicality provided by the company’s unique application of the Suzuki method to composition. Conceived and directed by Maria Porter (Clubbed Thumb: Inky, Train Play, Madame Killer, Salt Theater: Cherry Orchard, Target Margin: South, Feast, Mrs. Worm, Film: Hal Hartley’s Henry Fool), the production features an ensemble of dynamic young performers (Athena Colón, Maria Barcia, Morgan Hooper, Lesley Scheiber and Yesenia Tromp) who are all advanced Suzuki students and current students or alumni of Long Island University, where they trained under Porter and began developing the piece.
Third Child: Orestes Revisited debuted in Italy at the IUTA Theater Festival in July 2006, and was lauded as one of the most interesting ensembles present. Earlier this summer they performed at Fringe Festival Prague in the Czech Republic. At the New York premiere in September at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, audiences were moved and amazed at the company’s interpretation of this myth, their physical prowess, and their commitment to this style of performance. The aim of the ensemble is to create performances that reach the heart, while at the same time provoke the audience to engage actively in the event that is theatre. Tickets for the event are $15.
