C.W. Post Professor Translates Book About
Spanish Writer Federico García Lorca

Brookville, NY - Erica Frouman-Smith, Associate Professor of Spanish at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, has translated into English a book written over a decade ago about renowned Spanish poet and playwright, Federico García Lorca.

“Federico García Lorca and the Culture of Male Homosexuality” (McFarland, 2007), by Angel Sahuquillo, explores the significance of homosexuality in the poetry of Lorca, who was murdered at the peak of his career by the Franco fascists during the Spanish Civil War.

“Lorca is viewed as one of the greatest artists of twentieth century Spain,” said Dr. Frouman-Smith. “This work represents an important contribution to the field of gender studies, dealing with what has long been, until recently, a taboo subject in Spain: the acknowledgement of homosexuality as a major influence in the writings of Lorca and his accomplished contemporaries, Luis Cernuda, Salvador Dalí, Juan Gil-Albert and Emilio Prados.”

Published in Spain in 1991, this book was the first major work to focus on the position of Spanish culture toward homosexuality. According to the publisher, this new and updated translation now gives English-speaking readers an opportunity to focus on formal aspects of literary expressions of homosexuality.

Erica Frouman-Smith, a member of the Foreign Language Department since 1985, has been teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Spanish, Spanish American culture, and Spanish American literature with a specialization in contemporary Spanish American women writers. Her work on Argentine and Mexican women writers has led to the publication of critical studies and personal interviews, in addition to translations of their works. Dr. Frouman-Smith has served as advisor for the Spanish Honor Society, Sigma Delta Pi, and is currently advisor for the Masters degree programs in Spanish and Spanish Education.
