Michael Koenig Named Director of Ph.D. in Information Studies at C.W. Post

Brookville, N.Y. -- Michael E.D. Koenig, an internationally recognized expert in the growing field of information science, has been appointed director of the Ph.D. in information studies program at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. Dr. Charles Hildreth, who previously held the post, retired at the end of the 2006-2007 academic year.

Koenig will head the only doctoral program of its kind in the New York metropolitan area that focuses on the impact of information management on individuals, organizations and society. The Ph.D. program admits just 20 students per year and attracts top students with master’s degrees in a wide range of fields.

The founding dean of C.W. Post’s College of Information and Computer Science, Dr. Koenig’s previous positions include head of information services for Pfizer Inc., vice president at Tradenet Inc., associate professor at Columbia University's School of Library Service and dean of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Dominican University in River Forest, Ill.

"Dr. Koenig’s extensive background in the industry and rich understanding of our doctoral program makes him uniquely qualified for this position," said Mary Westermann-Cicio, acting dean and associate professor of the College of Information and Computer Science. "I have every confidence that, under his exceptional leadership, the program will continue to thrive."

Koenig earned his bachelor's from Yale University, two master's degrees from the University of Chicago and his Ph.D. at Drexel University.

Taught by faculty of the Palmer School of Library and Information Science, a division of the College of Information and Computer Science, the doctorate in information studies prepares individuals to assume leadership positions in research, teaching and in practice. The program offers two main areas of study - knowledge organization and access, and information studies and services - and is structured to accommodate part-time students who are already working in the information field or in related professions.
