C.W. Post to Hold Inaugural
Mental Health Counseling Symposium November 10
Brookville, NY -- The current and future state of mental health counseling in New York State will be the focus of the Inaugural Mental Health Counseling Symposium, "State of the Art in Mental Health Counseling: Best Practices and NewDirection," on Saturday, November 10 at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville. The symposium, co-sponsored by the Department of Counseling and Development at C.W. Post, and the Long Island Chapter of the New York Mental Health Counseling Association, will focus on areas of professional and clinical interest to licensed mental health counselors and those individuals seeking to secure licensure as a mental health counselor.
The symposium will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hillwood Commons. The cost is $35 for professionals and $25 for graduate students and includes breakfast and lunch. Attendees of the conference are eligible for 4.5 NBCC continuing education credits. All interested professionals within the mental health community are welcome to attend.
"With passage of licensure for Mental Health Counselors in New York State having become effective earlier this year, we felt it was important to develop a forum that will address the issues and concerns the newest licensed members of the mental health community in New York State will face," said James J. Colangelo, Psy.D, LMHC, LMFT, ACS, executive coordinator of counseling programs for the Department of Counseling and Development at C.W. Post.
"The highlight of the symposium will be a panel discussion on the current practice of mental health counseling within New York State and the future direction of the profession. Participants include NYMHCA Executive Director Judith Ritterman, NYMHCA President Frank Rizza, and Dr. Terry Bordan, chair of the C.W. Post Department of Counseling and Development. A question and answer period will follow.
In addition, a variety of workshops and seminars will cover clinical issues confronted by mental health counselors in agency settings and private practice, such as mental health law, psychopharmacology, domestic violence, eating disorders, adolescent depression and suicide, counseling lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender clients, mind/body connection in anxiety and stress disorders, and utilization of psychoanalytic techniques in mental health counseling.
"Mental health counselors desperately need a forum to present ideas about patient care and to provide support to colleagues," said Dr. Colangelo. "I believe this will be an enriching and rewarding professional experience for mental health counselors practicing in New York State."
Hillwood Commons is located on the C.W. Post Campus at 720 Northern Boulevard (Route 25A) in Brookville, New York. For more information call Dr. Colangelo at (516) 299-3674 or e-mail james.colangelo@liu.edu. Participants must register by November 5, 2007.
