Health Professions Week observed on November 7 Brookville, N.Y. -A shortage of qualified professionals to work in the health care industry is causing a crisis as the population ages and technology grows more complex. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, more new jobs-about 19 percent, or 3.6 million-created between 2004 and 2014 will be in health care than in any other industry. To bring further awareness to the countless career opportunities that are available, the School of Health Professions and Nursing at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University observed Health Professions Week on November 7, 2007 in Pell Hall from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Representatives from all five departments - Health Information Management, Nursing, Biomedical Sciences, Nutrition and Radiologic Technology - discussed courses of curriculum, internship programs and employment opportunities as well as presented first-hand examples of what it means to work in these high-growth fields. "Miss Granny Smith" an apple who serves as the perfect patient, displayed her medical records as faculty from the health information management department discussed patient privacy rights. Registered nurses were available to answer questions about smoking and eating disorders while members of the department of nutrition conducted an apple tasting and presented information on different body types. Faculty members from the department of biomedical sciences conducted an experiment with bands and light, a film about the role of the forensic scientist was screened and representatives from the department of radiological technology were on hand to answer questions and discuss job opportunities. An iPod was given away in a raffle sponsored by Nassau Educators Federal Credit Union and representatives from campus foodservice provider Aramark has donated subway coupons which were also raffled off along with t-shirts and other items. The School of Health Professions and Nursing offers a wide range of degrees that prepare students for careers in some of the fastest-growing health care fields as, among others, registered nurses, dieticians, medical technologists, radiologic technologists and health information managers.
