C.W. Post Student Club to Run ‘Amazing Race’ of NYC Churches

Will follow clues to find historic houses of worship; teams from Adelphi, Hofstra and Stony Brook will take part

Brookville, N.Y. – Where in Manhattan did the first American-born saint live? Which church was the site of the baptism scene in “The Godfather?” What Catholic social services agencywas founded by a woman who was portrayed by Long Island actress Moira Kelly?

Members of the Newman Catholic Community, the Catholic student organization at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, will use the answers to questions like these to track down New York City churches in a quest modeled after TV’s “The Amazing Race” and “Treasure Hunters.” They will compete against their peers from Adelphi University, Hofstra University and Stony Brook University on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“We were on a retreat with other Long Island college Catholic organizations two weeks ago, and the idea drew a tremendous response,” said the Rev. Ted Brown, director of religious life at C.W. Post.

Each team will need to tote a laptop computer or portable DVD player and will be given a DVD with photos of the seven churches and clues the teams can use to find them. Travelling the city by mass transit, the teams will make their way from one church to the next. The first team to make it to the last church on the list will be the winner. After dinner, the participants will visit Catholic Underground, a coffee house at Our Lady of Good Counsel on East 90th Street.
