700 High School Super Sleuths to Compete for Scholarships in
C.W. Post/Forensics World CSI Challenge
Teenage crime scene investigators will be judged by real-life detectives and prosecutors
W h o d u n i t ? More than 700 Long Island high school students will find out on Friday, April 27, 2007 when they conduct full-scale investigations of fictional crime scenes at the seventh annual CSI Challenge.
Sponsored by the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University and Forensics World, budding forensic scientists and crime fighters will compete for scholarships to C.W. Post by solving murder mysteries, gathering and analyzing physical evidence, interviewing and interrogating suspects and presenting their findings and theories to a mock court. The competition will be held at the Western Campus of Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood, N.Y.
Actors portraying a cast of suspicious characters bring the murder-mystery to life by interacting with the competitors. Members of the student teams act as police officers, crime scene technicians, homicide detectives, forensic scientists and prosecutors.
Contestants are thoroughly evaluated and critiqued throughout the competition by expert police officers, detectives, forensic scientists and prosecutors who utilize a comprehensive scoring system to determine how well each school manages its criminal investigation.
Each first-place team member will receive $3,000 in scholarships to C.W. Post, per year, worth $12,000 over four years. Second-place team members will receive $2,000 per year; third-place team members will receive $1,000 per year. The scholarships are for full-time undergraduate enrollment at C.W. Post for new incoming freshman entering in the 2007/2008 or 2008/2009 academic years. The scholarships can be applied to Bachelor’s degrees in forensic science, criminal justice, political science or biomedical science or pre-law or pre-med programs. Students must meet C.W. Post’s general admissions requirements and be accepted for admission directly from high school. Students must complete 12 credits each semester and achieve a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
