C.W. Post Professor Honored by the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences

Brookville, NY—Roslyn Muraskin, Ph.D., professor of criminal justice in the College of Management at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University and the director and founder of the Long Island Women's Institute at C.W. Post, will be awarded the Becky Tatum Excellence Award by the Minorities and Women Section of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences at the ACJS Annual Meeting in Seattle on March 16, 2007.

In addition to receiving the award, Dr. Muraskin will chair the panels “Conceptions of Gender” and “Media Alterations of Public Perception.” She will also present papers titled “Women’s Equality?” and “Media and Crime.”

The Becky Tatum Excellence Award is bestowed annually by the Minorities and Women Section of the ACJS to an individual in recognition of her great scholarly enhancement of women’s status through contributions to professional organizations, academic intuitions and the criminal justice system. Dr. Muraskin is the first recipient of this very prestigious award.

A resident of Middle Island, Dr. Muraskin is a member of the ACJS and has held the elected position of Trustee of Region I (Northeast Region). She knew and worked with Becky Tatum, a well-known author, scholar and researcher in the field of minorities, women and criminal justice. “It is an honor to receive this award in her name,” Dr. Muraskin said.

Dr. Muraskin’s published works include “It’s a Crime: Women and Justice,” (Prentice Hall, 2007), “Key Correctional Issues,” (Prentice Hall, 2005), “Media and Crime: Headlines or Reality,” (Prentice Hall, 2007), “Key Correctional Issues,” (Prentice Hall, 2005), and “Visions for Change: Crime and Justice in the Twenty-First Century,” (Prentice Hall, 2005 4th edition- 5th edition in the works) with Albert R. Roberts. She is the editor of the Women’s Series for Prentice Hall, including “Women in Law Enforcement Careers,” (2005), “The Female Homicide Offender: Serial Murder and the Case of Aileen Wuornos,” (2004), and “The Incarcerated Woman: Rehabilitative Programming in Criminal Justice,” (2003). She is the editor of the “Criminal Justice Series, A Critical Journal of Crime, Law and Society,” a refereed journal published quarterly by Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, and serves on the board of many journals and publications, including the editorial board of the “Encyclopedia of Criminology.

At C.W. Post, she also serves as the executive director of the Alumni Chapter for the College of Management. She has been honored by the College of Management with the “You Have Made a World of Difference,” award and was a recipient of the Outstanding Contribution Award to Criminal Justice from the Minority Section of ACJS.

She received her doctorate in criminal justice from the Graduate Center at the City University of New York, and her master’s degree at New York University.  She received her bachelor’s degree from Queens College.

She is the vice president for the Long Island Women’s Agenda and served as the vice-chair of the Women’s Division of the American Society of Criminology (2004-2006). She served as trustee of Region One for the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, as well as president of the Northeastern Association for Criminal Justice Sciences.
