New C.W. Post Program Leads to Careers
in College and University Administration

Colleges and universities can be wonderful places to work – optimistic and upbeat, dedicated to learning, research and expression, often in beautiful settings. The pay and benefits are good, and job prospects are encouraging. “As education and training take on greater importance in everyone’s lives, the need for people to administer education programs will grow,” reports the U.S. Department of Labor.

A new program in higher education administration is now available for those interested in a leadership position in a college or university setting. The only program of its kind on Long Island, the 15-credit Advanced Certificate in Higher Education offered by the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University can be completed in as little as 12 months. Prospective students will have the opportunity to learn more about the program during an Admissions Open House on Wednesday, March 27, 2007 at 6:30 p.m. in Hillwood Commons on the C.W. Post Campus, 720 Northern Boulevard (Route 25A) in Brookville.

This program is designed for individuals who are recent college graduates seeking to begin meaningful careers in academia; executives who are considering a career transition into higher education; and professionals who currently hold a managerial position at a college or university.

“Few careers offer as many enriching opportunities as a career in higher education administration,” said Dr. Joseph Shenker, provost of the C.W. Post Campus. “Our programs offer the first formal training in higher education administration on Long Island.”

“Working as an administrator in a university or college is both a rewarding and challenging opportunity to shape today’s multifaceted learning environment,” said Dr. Shirley Robinson Pippins, president of Suffolk County Community College. “The C.W. Post program prepares students with the knowledge they will need for a successful career in this highly specialized field.”

Through the program, students gain a comprehensive understanding of the history, culture, organization, policies, administrative systems and leadership challenges of higher learning in America. The program prepares aspiring administrators for a variety of leadership roles such as assistant/associate director; director; manager; assistant/associate vice president; chief executive officer; and provost in public and private higher education settings such as community colleges, four-year institutions and specialized institutes.

Classes are scheduled with the working professional in mind. Students can choose from an evening or weekend format depending on the scheduling needs of the entering class. Students will move through the program together, creating a collegial environment and enjoying the benefits of collaborative learning and networking.

The 15-credit Advanced Certificate in Higher Education offers five courses that cover the history and culture of higher education, leadership, organizational development, legal affairs and higher education policy, budgeting, fundraising/development, grants management, planning and evaluation, and more.

Students can also choose to pursue the Advanced Diploma in Higher Education, a 24-credit option, which includes two special topics courses and field experience in a college or university environment.

Applications are now being accepted into the Fall 2007 program. A bachelor’s degree is required. For more information or reservations for the March 27 open house, contact Gail Maerz at 516-299-2155, or visit the University’s Web site at www.liu.edu/higher.
