C.W. Post Hosts Superintendent-College President Partnership Meeting

Brookville, N.Y. – Dr. David J. Steinberg, president of Long Island University, and Roberta Gerold, superintendent of Middle Country School District, met with a coalition of superintendents and members of the Long Island Regional Advisory Council of Higher Education to discuss cheating and academic honesty. The meeting took place on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at the Tilles Center Atrium, located on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, NY.

During the roundtable forum, a significant gathering of college and university presidents, school superintendents, principals, deans and educators from across Long Island explored issues of cheating including how best to define academic honesty, the meaning of cheating according to the level of student development, and the best way to address the issue appropriate to the age of the cohort. The meeting’s goal was to craft a “white paper” that can assist teachers and administrators at every level address this complex reality.

“Our collective voice, as the educational establishment, needs to better articulate what are the boundaries of acceptable behavior in our post-modern society and how best we can educate each student in an age-specific way so that this core ethical question is continuously addressed as a developmental educational opportunity,” Dr. Steinberg said in referring to the partnership meeting.

According to Gerold, “We think the collective wisdom of Long Island educators might help create an Island-wide definition of what academic honesty is, and how we should teach it.”
