Long Island Radio Day at C.W. Post March 1

Brookville, N.Y. – In our fast-paced, instant-message world, it’s hard to imagine that the radio was once the primary source of news and entertainment in most households. Learn more the history of radio at Long Island Radio Day on Saturday, March 1, 2008 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the atrium of Tilles Center for the Performing Arts on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. The event, which is co-sponsored by the Long Island Wireless Historical Society and C.W. Post Radio Station WCWP/88.1 FM, is open to the public.

Alexander Magoun, Ph.D., executive director of the David Sarnoff Library, will present a lecture on television history. The afternoon program includes a live re-enactment of Orson Welles’ “War of the Worlds” in Hillwood Commons Lecture Hall at 3 p.m. In addition, the event will include the sale and display of antique and restored radios, ham radio demonstrations and old-time radio recordings. Visitors also can tour C.W. Post’s Abrams Communications Center, which is home toWebRadio WCWP, the student run Internet radio station, and WCWP/88.1, an FM station that is an affiliate of the Long Island University Public Radio Network.

Established in 1995, the Long Island Wireless Historical Society is engaged in the mission of research, documentation, collection and exchange of information regarding the early history of Long Island’s wireless telegraphy, telephone, radio and television, through publications, meetings, the Internet and special exhibits.

WCWP/88.1 FM is partnered with anchor station WLIU/88.3 FM to form the Long Island University Public Radio Network. The station broadcasts 24 hours a day offering listeners National Public Radio news and information, student-hosted programming and a variety of popular music formats.
