Brookville, N.Y. – Music moves people in many ways including physically, emotionally and spiritually. But how much effect can music have beyond the dance floor? From union songs to reggae anthems, activists have hoped – and others have feared – that music can transform people’s minds as well as their hearts: and function not only as entertainment but as propaganda. Jon Pareles, chief popular music critic of The New York Times drew upon his lengthy career to discuss the impact music has on our society and culture. During the well-attended event, which took place on Thursday, March 27, 2008 at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, Mr. Pareles played several songs for the audience and analyzed their political overtones. The event was co-sponsored by Student Affairs-Faculty Partnership Initiative Committee and The New York Times.
