Brookville, N.Y. – A new ambulance that will provide immediate on-campus care to all students, staff, faculty and visitors to the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University will be dedicated on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at 11 a.m. outside Lorber Hall. A $100,000 special legislative award from New York State that funded the ambulance was secured by New York State Senator Carl L. Marcellino of the 5th Senate District.
The ambulance will be used by the C.W. Post Emergency Medical Service, a team of C.W. Post students who are New York State-certified Emergency Medical Technicians. They assist all members of the C.W. Post community, including more than 9,200 students, 355 faculty members, hundreds of support staff and administrators as well as attendees at any events on Campus such as visitors to Tilles Center for the Performing Arts and athletic contests. The C.W. Post EMS receives more than 100 calls every semester.
“The EMS members are a vital part of campus health and safety, providing the C.W. Post community with immediate urgent medical care and transportation, eliminating the need to call other local EMS agencies,” said Paul Rapess, director of the C.W. Post Department of Public Safety.
The new Type III ambulance features various emergency medical care equipment that are required to perform life-saving functions, including a Ferno-Profless 35-P, a Phillips HEARTSTART defibrillator with ECG, a Ferno Model 42 Stairchair and other EMS supplies.
“Senator Marcellino’s commitment to the health and safety of the campus community is greatly appreciated,” said C.W. Post’s Provost Joseph Shenker. “This new ambulance will ensure that the members of the C.W. Post EMS can carry out their duties with professionalism and compassion.”
The new ambulance replaces a 1990 model that has become increasingly less reliable.
Senator Marcellino, campus administrators, and the students of the C.W. Post EMS as well as members of the Nassau County, Old Brookville and Old Westbury police departments and volunteers from the Roslyn Fire Companies expected to attend the “wet down” -- a ceremony traditionally held when an agency receives a new vehicle.
