Final Southampton College Class to Graduate on May 11, 2008
Southampton students, professors made a lasting impact at C.W. Post

Southampton College's 2008 Valedictorian is Erin Wylie.
Brookville, N.Y. – The last group of students from Southampton College of Long Island University will graduate on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 11, 2008 at the C.W. Post Commencement. The commencement will include 24 students who will receive bachelor’s degrees from Southampton College in myriad subjects including psychobiology, biology, environmental studies and fine arts.

The valedictorian of the class, Erin Wylie of Hauppauge, N.Y. majored in psychobiology and will graduate with a G.P.A. of 3.96. Serving as volunteer and eventually an intern at the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind in Smithtown, N.Y. since 2001, Wylie said she would like to work with a service dog organization, helping train dogs who aid the physically handicapped.

“I’ve always wanted to work with dogs and help people,” she said. “This is a good combination of both.”

After being recognized at the main commencement exercises, students from Southampton will participate in an individual recognition ceremony at the Interfaith Center. A breakfast reception for students and parents will be held on Saturday, May 10 in the Winnick Student Center from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

In addition to being selected as the Valedictorian, Wylie will receive both the Robert N. Weinberger Academic Achievement Award in Psychology and the Rosemarie Ungarelli Memorial Award in Psychology. Psychobiology major Katherine Sotolotto will also receive the Rosemarie Ungarelli Award. Five students (Justin Ecret, Biology; Janelle Hrycik, Marine Science; Sean O'Callaghan, Art Education; Katherine Sotolotto, Psychobiology and Erin Wylie, Psychobiology) will also be recognized for earning places on the Dean's List in every semester of attendance. At commencement, Wylie will serve as the Symbolic Degree Recipient for the Southampton graduating class.

Undergraduate programs at Southampton were moved to the C.W. Post Campus in 2005. More than 350 students, faculty and administrators made the transition from Southampton to C.W. Post to stay in the Long Island University family.

“Southampton students who came to C.W. Post to complete their degrees have left a lasting impact on the Brookville campus,” said Joseph Shenker, Ph.D., provost of the C.W. Post Campus. “Likewise, Southampton professors who have transferred to C.W. Post have brought a wealth of new expertise and perspective to the C.W. Post Campus.”

Even though the students from Southampton will no longer be physically present at C.W. Post, their legacy lives on in contributions they have made to the Campus. Protecting Every Aspect Concerning the Environment or P.E.A.C.E, an environmental organization that originated in Southampton, is a student group that arranges for a great deal of environmentally based programming including discussions and workshops on global warming, recycling and reducing fossil fuel dependence. Other student groups that have come from Southampton College will continue to stay active at C.W. Post.

Paul Forestell, Ph.D., a Southampton professor who served as the dean of undergraduate programs for Southampton College at C.W. Post, expressed gratitude for the warm welcome shown to Southampton faculty and students at C.W. Post.

“C.W. Post welcomed us with open arms from day one,” Dr. Forestell said. “Those of us who came from Southampton have been encouraged to maintain our Southampton academic programs, while becoming fully immersed in the vibrant life of the C.W. Post Campus. While we all regretted the loss of the Southampton campus, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to the C.W. Post community for reaching out to us.”

Commencement exercises will take place on the Great Lawn at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, NY beginning at 9:30 a.m. C.W. Post’s commencement ceremonies also include graduates from Southampton College, the Brentwood Campus and Long Island University at Riverhead. C.W. Post is also graduating its 100,000 alumni.
