Robert Marchesi of Commack knows that a little effort during summer vacation can pay big dividends during the school year.
Marchesi, a sports management major at Towson University in Maryland, took advantage of the summer session at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University to get one of his more challenging courses, “Corporation Finance,” out of the way.
“It’s one of the courses for my major,” Marchesi said. “By taking it in the summer when you’re only focusing on the one class, it's a lot easier than when it’s one of five classes you’re taking in the spring or fall.”
There are many good reasons for Long Island residents who attend college elsewhere to take summer courses as visiting students at C.W. Post. Like Marchesi, they can concentrate on a rigorous course with no distractions. They can get a head start on the coming semester. And if their college careers include extra-curricular activities such as sports, they can build a little breathing room into their busier semesters.
“I’ve taken a science requirement and a literature requirement at C.W. Post,” said Ruth Morrongiello of Lloyd Harbor, a junior and member of the women’s lacrosse team at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa. “In the spring, during lacrosse season, I could take four courses instead of five, because my summer course counted as the fifth. The school work was manageable, and it’s kind of nice getting it done over the summer.”
C.W. Post offers more than 700 undergraduate and graduate courses in three five-week summer sessions. Visiting undergraduate or graduate students will find easy, one-step admission and registration and a wide assortment of courses that count toward their degree programs at their full-time schools.
Classes are offered days, evenings and weekends to accommodate students with work or family responsibilities. Most are held either three or four days per week. Summer courses at C.W. Post feature personal attention from distinguished and dedicated professors in a beautiful campus setting, conveniently located in Brookville minutes from Exit 39 of the Long Island Expressway.
Paula Beck of Carle Place said she is pleased that her daughter, Alana Beck, takes advantage of C.W. Post’s summer program as she pursues a degree in engineering at Robert Morris University in Pennsylvania.
“Her major is so challenging that she’s planning to take courses every summer,” she said. “C.W. Post offers pre-engineering math classes, which are perfect for what she needs.” Alana Beck is also busy with extracurricular activities, and is grateful for the chance to get some work done during the quiet weeks of June, July and August.
“Between classes and sports and working in the Engineering Department, she’s busy from morning to evening,” Paula Beck said. “She’s better off trying to get some heavy-duty classes done during the off-season in the summer.”
