Partners in the Parks:
Linking Honors Students and America’s Natural Legacy
Joan Digby, Ph.D., director of the Honors Program and Merit Fellowship at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, conceptualized Partners in the Parks in 2007 to forge a connection between college students and America’s great natural legacy.
Given over to the leadership of Matt Nickerson and Todd Petersen of Southern Utah University in cooperation with the National Collegiate Honors Council and the National Parks Service, Partners in the Parks organizes unique opportunities for honors students and faculty to visit areas of the American landscape noted for their beauty, significance and lasting value.
Seminars led by university faculty and park personnel include historical, scientific, cultural, and other important areas unique to a given park. Projects include exciting recreational opportunities and service learning in the parks to broaden participants’ understanding of the overall value of national parks to our country and its citizens.
