C.W. Post Nutrition Professor Co-authors Book on Nutrition in Kidney Disease

Brookville, N.Y. -- Jerrilynn Burrowes, Ph.D., RD, CDN, an associate professor and director of the undergraduate dietetics program in the Department of Nutrition at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, has recently co-authored a book, "Nutrition in Kidney Disease" (Humana Press, 2009), as part of a collaborative group of distinguished dietitians and physicians in the specialized field of kidney disease and clinical nutrition.

The book, which is designed for undergraduate and graduate-level nutrition and allied health profession students, medical students and residents as well as nutrition and allied health clinicians, is a comprehensive perspective of the emerging science in nutrition in kidney disease. Topics addressed include kidney function in health and disease, in-depth information on the prevention of common disorders associated with chronic kidney disease, current treatment options and management based on the latest scientific evidence and nutrition concerns.

Dr. Burrowes is a nationally recognized clinical nutrition leader in the field of kidney disease. Prior to her appointment at C.W. Post in 2003, she was the research coordinator for the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City. She has been actively involved as an investigator and collaborator on one of the landmark NIH-sponsored clinical trials of morbidity and mortality in people receiving maintenance hemodialysis during the past decade as part of the Hemodialysis (HEMO) Study. Dr. Burrowes is currently serving as the science program fellow at the North America Branch of the International Life Sciences Institute in Washington, D.C., where she works on various technical issues relating to nutrition and food science.

Dr. Burrowes has held many leadership and advisory roles in professional organizations and societies including the National Kidney Foundation, the NKF Council on Renal Nutrition (CRN), the NKF/CRN of Greater New York, and the NKF of New York/New Jersey. She is a member of several professional organizations including the American Dietetic Association, the American Society for Nutrition, the NKF/CRN, and the International Society for Renal Nutrition and Metabolism. She serves as editor of the nutrition section of Advances in Chronic Kidney Disease, is on the editorial board of the Journal of Renal Nutrition and is a contributing editor of the Clinical Column that appears in the journal Nutrition Today. She was recognized with the Renal Dietitian Award from the NKF/CRN in 1998. In 2005, she was the recipient of the Joel D. Kopple Award from the same organization for her outstanding contributions to the field of kidney disease.

She earned a B.A. degree in biology/pre-medicine from Fisk University in Nashville, T.N. and an M.S. in foods, nutrition, and dietetics and a Ph.D. in nutrition from New York University. Dr. Burrowes also is a registered dietitian.
