“Dark Banquet: Blood and the Curious Lives of Blood-Feeding Creatures” – Lecture Oct. 15
For centuries, blood feeders have inhabited our nightmares and horror stories, as well as the shadowy realms of scientific knowledge. Zoologist and C.W. Post Biology Professor Bill Schutt has explored the mysterious world of the sanguivores, studying their habits and evolution, as well as their surprising benefits to the medical world. Among the blood feeders we’ll meet during Dr. Schutt’s talk are vampire bats, leeches and bed bugs (which are making a creepy resurgence in posh hotels and well-kept homes near you). Other vampires in the news will also be discussed, including ticks, chiggers, and mites (the latter implicated in Colony Collapse Disorder – currently devastating honey bees worldwide).
