Four C.W. Post Faculty Achieve New Title: Senior Professor
New rank signifies educational excellence; recipients include professors of photography, counseling, astrophysics and management
Brookville, N.Y. – Four professors at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University have been awarded the title of senior professor, a new rank that signifies excellence in teaching, research and service to the University.
The first professors to hold the title at Long Island University include an acclaimed photographer, an influential counseling educator, the chairman of the Department of Management and a renowned expert on black holes, the big-bang theory and the theory of relativity.
To qualify as a senior professor, faculty member must have held the position of professor – commonly referred to as “full professor” -- for at least five years, and a team of three independent experts must approve their teaching, service and research. The title is awarded by the University Board of Trustees.
The position of senior professor was established in the current collective bargaining agreement between Long Island University and the C.W. Post faculty. The other ranks of professor are, in ascending order, assistant professor, associate professor and professor.
The senior professors include:
- Professor of Counseling Daniel Araoz, a practicing psychoanalyst and internationally known author who helped shape the “New Hypnosis,” a treatment model using both psychoanalysis and hypnosis.
- Mathematics Professor Arvind Borde, who is also a scholar at the Kavli Institute of Theoretical Physics at the University of California at Santa Barbara and a former visiting scientist at Tufts University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Brookhaven National Laboratory.
- Joan Powers, a professor of photography, whose own photos have been included in more than 22 one-person and group exhibitions throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.
- Baichun Xiao, professor and chairman of the Department of Management who holds a doctorate from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and has published extensively on revenue management, service management and optimization.
The C.W. Post Campus faculty includes 330 professors.
