8 Thesis Projects in One: The Post Theatre Company Presents
Jen Genet’s The Balcony – February 13-15
Eight senior theater majors at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University have combined their Honors thesis projects into a performance of Jean Genet’s The Balcony, showing February 13 through 15 at the Rifle Range Theatre. As both the cast and the production/design team, the actors will perform principal roles in the show as well as fulfill the responsibilities of dramaturgy, vocal and movement choreography, musical direction, make-up and mask, costume, lighting and set design.
The eight seniors will be joined by five additional cast members including three undergraduates and two seniors.
The play focuses on the private rooms inside The Grand Balcony, a house of illusions where Madame Irma serves supper to prominent clients. In truth, The Grand Balcony is a brothel, and "supper" is actually the repletion of one’s appetite for sexual fantasies. Madame Irma provides the props, costumes and ladies.
Outside the brothel, the French Revolution is turning bloody as the monarchy is being overthrown and killed in the streets. As the rebels move closer to the brothel, stray bullets and explosions force Madame Irma, her staff and clients to costume themselves and make a highly publicized appearance as members of the monarchy.
This production will run in the Rifle Range Theatre on the C.W. Post Campus, 720 Northern Blvd., in Brookville on February 13 and 14 at 8 p.m., and Sunday, February 15, at 3 p.m. Please contact Heather Drastal at 516-299-2110 or via email at heather.drastal@liu.edu to reserve complimentary tickets.
