C.W. Post Launches Environmental Citizenship Institute for High School Juniors and Seniors
Five-day seminar will explore environmental issues and challenges unique to Long Island

Brookville, N.Y. – From windmills to renewable energy sources, from reducing carbon emissions to preserving the dunes on our shores, Long Island faces a host of unique environmental challenges. In an effort to cultivate young community leaders, the School of Education at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University is launching the Environmental Citizenship Institute, a five-day intensive seminar for high school juniors and seniors interested in learning more about Long Island's distinctive ecosystem.

The Institute, which is funded by a grant from the Rauch Foundation, will meet Monday, July 13 to Friday, July 17, 2009 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no fee for attending; however, space is limited to 25 students.

"The goal of the Environmental Citizenship Institute is to prepare young community leaders by imparting to them important knowledge about Long Island's ecological challenges and the practical skills needed to promote environmental sustainability on Long Island," said Dr. Marilyn Pedalino, the assistant dean of the School of Education and the Coordinator of the Institute.

Guest presenters will include professors, practitioners and civic leaders actively engaged in the field of ecology. Through small group discussions, presentations and lectures, they will address a series of issues related to Long Island's environment, including natural resources, water, land, air and the ecosystem.

To apply, students must submit a 300 word essay explaining why they would like to participate in the Institute. For information visit www.liu.edu/cwpost/eci or contact Dr. Marilyn Pedalino at (516) 299-3679 or send an e-mail to marilyn.pedalino@liu.edu.
