C.W. Post Students Go to Washington for Environmental Activism PowerShift 2009 Global Warming Conference Brings America’s Youth Together
Dr. Scott Carlin, along with students Nicole Bischof, James Ridgway, and Stephanie Patino, spoke-out for the environment at the national conference. |
A group of students from the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University traveled to Washington D.C. to take a message of comprehensive and immediate federal climate action to Capitol Hill at a national conference on global warming.
The students learned about the conference from watching a video in the C.W. Post course called “Human Dimensions of Climate Change.” In Power Shift ‘09, students concerned about global warming met with others from around the country, learned more about the issue, and lobbied Congress on the last day of the conference. The students were able to meet with staff members of several Long Island Congressional offices, including Congressman Gary Ackerman, Congressman Tim Bishop, and Congressman Gregory Meeks.
The conference was held February 27 to March 2, 2009. To reduce their own carbon impact, the C.W. Post students traveled to the conference in Washington D.C. by bus from New York City. The C.W. Post students attending the conference included Nicole Bischof, James Ridgway, and Stephanie Patino. Their professor, Dr. Scott Carlin, a well-known environmental researcher, accompanied them.
