C.W. Post Supporting Renewable Energy Through Green Products
C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University is making a commitment to support greener sources of power by purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from Hess Corporation, the campus’ natural gas provider.
The REC program funds the research, development, and operation of green energy systems through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Green Power Partnership. C.W. Post joined the REC program in order to reduce the campus’ carbon footprint and invest in the future development of renewable energy sources.
A REC represents the rights to the environmental benefits derived from electricity generated by renewable resources. Renewable energy can be purchased to support wind power, solar power, hydropower and biomass energy.
With Hess Corporation matching C.W. Post’s contributions, the Campus bought 1,020 hours, or 6 percent of the total energy it uses, to fund Photo Voltaic (PV) panels, which are part of a system that converts sunlight into electricity.
C.W. Post gives back to the environment through a number of green initiatives as part of the campus motto: “Go Green… Learn It… Live It.” This includes an electrically-powered Facilities Services vehicle; an award-winning, energy-conserving geothermal system; a community garden on the south campus; a recycling program in most residence halls; an Environmental Citizenship Institute for high school students; and new Green Curriculum for C.W. Post Honors students.
