The new school year is just around the corner, and in a few weeks more than 100,000 Long Island students will be starting or returning to college. Many freshmen who plan to begin their education at a community college are finding the courses they need are closed due to over-enrollment. To assist these students, the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville is extending its admissions and scholarship deadlines for undergraduate study for the Fall semester.
"There are still many options for new freshman who would like to begin their college studies next month," said Joanne Graziano, assistant provost for admissions and recruitment at the C.W. Post Campus. “There is no reason why a student should take a semester off. C.W. Post offers a full range of courses during the day and evening to accommodate bachelor’s degree requirements.” More than 1,800 undergraduate classes are offered during the Fall semester at C.W. Post in a wide variety of subject areas, including English, psychology, economics, accounting, history, music and political science. C.W. Post offers small classes averaging only 20 students.
New freshman entering C.W. Post are still eligible for a wide range of scholarships and financial aid. Freshman who have a minimum high school G.P.A. of 80 or above and an SAT score of 1,010, can receive automatic scholarships ranging from $9,000 to $18,000 per year. C.W. Post also has a generous scholarship program for transfer students. In fact, most transferring students who have at least 24 credits from an accredited college or university and a GPA of 3.0 or higher are eligible for scholarships ranging from $6,000 to $14,000 per year.
Last month, nursing student Elizabeth Alchermes of Glen Cove found herself closed out of classes she needed at a community college on Long Island and contacted an admissions counselor at C.W. Post. “I did not want to interrupt my education, and C.W. Post had openings in the classes I needed,” she said. This September, Alchermes will take two courses, in mathematics and anatomy, which she can apply toward her R.N. license.
Admission, academic and financial aid counselors will be available throughout the month of August and the first two weeks in September to assist new students in enrolling at C.W. Post. The University is holding Enrollment Services Week on Monday, August 17 through Saturday, August 22 in the Admissions Office and on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 from 3 to 7:30 p.m. in Humanities Hall. High school and college transfer students will receive admission, financial aid, transfer credit evaluation and academic counseling all in one visit. Those who qualify can apply for admission, be accepted and register for classes on the spot.
"Expert academic counselors are ready to help students plan a schedule that works for them and apply for scholarships and other forms of financial aid," said Graziano. In addition, students seeking a residential experience can apply for on-campus housing by contacting Residence Life at 516-299-2326.
Classes begin on Tuesday, September 8. The C.W. Post Campus is located at 720 Northern Boulevard (Route 25A) in Brookville, NY. To learn more about Enrollment Services Week and C.W. Post’s academic programs, visit www.liu.edu/cwpost or call (516) 299-2900.
