Brookville, NY – The historic admissions office building at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University has undergone a major renovation and will be dedicated as Mullarkey Hall on Friday, October 16 in honor of its benefactor, campus chancellor Theresa “Tess” Mall Mullarkey, and her late husband, investment banker Thomas F.X. Mullarkey.
The building, which serves as a welcome center and offices for C.W. Post’s undergraduate admissions operations, was renovated over a 12-month period with a generous gift from Mrs. Mullarkey. Designed in the Tudor Revival style reminiscent of the Elizabethan age, the two-story structure was originally constructed in 1928 as a 30-room cottage for Adelaide Brevoort Close, the daughter of cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post. From August 2008 to September 2009, the stately building was retrofitted with an environmentally friendly geothermal heating and cooling system, energy-efficient windows and lights, redesigned office spaces, conference rooms for prospective students, families and admissions counselors, and a new entrance and lobby. The exterior of the building retains its original appointments, including a striking medieval tower on the southside of the building, and a beautiful waterfall and stream that flow from its base. A new entranceway opens to a tranquil courtyard and seating area.
“C.W. Post is grateful to Chancellor Mullarkey for her tireless dedication to our students and the entire university community,” said C.W. Post Provost Paul Forestell. “She has devoted much of her life to helping others attain a quality education and to improving the local community in which we live. Her benevolence has made it possible to undertake the restoration of a treasured building on our campus and dramatically improve service to prospective students.”
A resident of Locust Valley, NY, Tess Mullarkey has served as chancellor of C.W. Post and as a trustee of Long Island University for more than 15 years. Her late husband, Thomas Mullarkey, was a partner at Lazard Freres & Company and served as senior vice chairman of Long Island University’s board of trustees and former chairman of the board at Fordham University. A tireless advocate for higher education, Mrs. Mullarkey created the Theresa Mullarkey Endowed Scholarship at C.W. Post, the Thomas F.X. Mullarkey Professorship at Fordham University, and the John and Laura K. Mall Scholarship Fund at Wellesley College, where she is a trustee emerita.
A dedication ceremony and tour of the newly renovated building will take place at 3 p.m. on Friday, October 16.
The C.W. Post Campus is located at 720 Northern Boulevard in Brookville, NY.
