Long Island Philosophers to Gather for Conference at C.W. Post

Brookville, NY - Some of Long Island's most active scholars in the field of philosophy will gather for debate, discussion and deliberation on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University for the Long Island Philosophical Society meeting.

“This will be an intensely academic event featuring 28 presentations and a wide variety of perspectives on business practices, teaching, human rights, ancient philosophy and the art of thought,” said Hoyt Hobbs, professor of philosophy at C.W. Post.

There are eight sessions, each with a theme and a facilitator. Topics include: “What Every Reasonable Embryo Would Consent To, ” “An Epistemology of Thanksgiving, ” “The Concept of Beauty in Chess” and “The Situationist Challenge to Aristotle’s Aesthetics.” One of the sessions will commemorate the centenary of William James (1842-1910), the pioneering American psychologist and philosopher, Harvey Cormier, an associate professor of philosophy at Stony Brook University, will deliver the keynote address titled "New Pragmatists, Neopragmatism and James's Pragmatism."

The conference begins at 9 a.m. and includes breakfast and lunch and concludes at 4:30 p.m. with a reception. Attendees include some of the area's best and brightest intellectuals, including professors, researchers and academicians from St. John's University, United States Military Academy, John Jay College, CUNY Graduate Center, Long Island University's Brooklyn and C.W. Post Campus.

For more than 40 years, the Long Island Philosophical Society has provided a forum for the exchange of philosophical ideas through meetings and conferences.

The conference is free and open to the public and takes place in various buildings on the C.W. Post Campus, located at 720 Northern Boulevard in Brookville, New York.
