C.W. Post’s Ian Smart Ready to Challenge for Heisman Trophy

August 28, 2002 -- C.W. Post running back Ian Smart – who was last season’s #1 rusher and scorer for all of college football in the country – was presented as a Heisman Trophy candidate at a press conference this afternoon at the new Pratt Recreation Center on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, New York.

The press conference was an opportunity to highlight Smart’s extraordinary achievements prior to the start of his final college season, which begins September 7 at a home game at Hickox Field.

C.W. Post Sports Information Director Brad Sullivan acknowledged Smart’s "underdog status" for the Heisman Trophy -– which is usually awarded to a major Division I running back or quarterback -- but felt that Smart’s production on the field was worthy of consideration despite the team’s Division II status. The Heisman Trophy is awarded to "the outstanding college football player in the United States."

Smart, 22, of North Babylon, NY, is a physical education major and running back for the C.W. Post Pioneers. Over his 3-year collegiate career, he has rushed for 4,624 yards and scored 65 touchdowns. He has a chance at breaking the all-time NCAA mark in both categories this season.

Ian Smart said he was proud to be a part of the C.W. Post team. When asked how he felt about the Heisman promotion, he humbly replied: "I can’t let it be a distraction. I want to accomplish the team’s goals before I focus on any individual goals."

College officials at the press conference included Bryan Collins, head football coach; Vin Salamone, Director of Athletics; Dr. David J. Steinberg, president of Long Island University, and Dr. Joseph Shenker, provost, C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University.

Bryan Collins noted that promoting a long-shot candidate has a precedent, citing players such as Joe Dudek and Gordie Lockbaum.
