January 18, 2001 - Hillwood Art Museum, located on the C.W. Post Campus
of Long Island University, presents "Not for Publication: In the
Spirit of the Book,"- an exhibition of contemporary artwork representing
or composed of books in various unconventional forms. The work in this
exhibition is by American artists who choose to produce art that refers
to the book in inventive and conceptual ways. It is a small sampling of
a significant worldwide trend called "book art."
Book art is the creation of unique representations of an artist's image
of what a book might be or become; these books are often unsuitable for
traditional reading. They suggest, confuse, and tease definition. They
are formed by nontraditional construction and experimental techniques
that incorporate materials and objects not commonly associated with the
book. Such works become an inventive retelling of what a book is. Examples
include altered books, books made from leaves or steel, or books that
become sculptures.
This exhibition, which includes the work of 26 artists, features pieces
by Barton Benes, Ligorano/Reese, Richard Minsky, and Robert The, and is
certain to change the viewer's definition of the book. It includes Tuesday
evening lectures and performances and two Saturday family activity days.
