Guitar enthusiasts, professionals, amateurs and the general public are
invited to attend the Ninth Annual Long Island Guitar Festival on Saturday,
April 27 to 29, 2001 at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University,
Northern Boulevard (Route 25A) in Brookville. In the past, the Long Island
Guitar Festival has proudly presented such distinguished guitarists as
Benjamin Verdery, Carlo Domeniconi (in his U.S. debut) Manuel Barrueco,David
Leisner, Michael Lorimer, Eduardo Fernandez, Howard Alden, Jorge Caballero,
Mark Marino, Olav Chris Henriksen, Mark Elf, Eliot Fisk, Ben Moran, Frank
Vignola, Chieli Minucci, Jerry Willard, Gene Bertoncini, Howard Morgen,
Bucky and John Pizzarelli, Pat O'Brien, Dennis Koster, Harris Becker,
Ernesto Tamayo, Kevin Dolen, Pasquale Bianculli, Curtis High School Guitar
Ensemble, Dennis Cinelli, Winslow Browning, John Zaccari, and David Starobin.
This event is co-sponsored by C.W. Post's School of Visual and Performing
Arts and supported in part through grants from the D'Addario Foundation
for the Performing Arts, the Augustine Foundation, the C.W. Post Institute
for Arts and Culture, Guitar Center, Soloette Travel Guitar, Mel Bay and
Long Island University's John P. McGrath Fund.

The festival starts with a performance by Carlo Domeniconi at 8 p.m.
in the Hillwood Recital Hall. Domeniconi has written numerous pieces for
solo instruments, chamber music and orchestral works. His output includes
13 concertos for one or two guitars and orchestra as well as various compositions
for solo guitar, and chamber music combinations including the guitar.
Domeniconi's works are now performed throughout the world by himself and
by many performers of international renown, including guitarists John
Williams and Christopher Parkening. This marks Carlo Domeniconi's second
visit to the C.W. Post Campus. Admission for this event is $15 for the
general public, $10 students and seniors.

The festival continues at 8:15 p.m. in the Hillwood Recital Hall with
a performance by Benjamin Verdery, guitarist and composer described by
Guitar Review Magazine as "An American original, an American master."
Verdery has performed in many countries and has recorded and performed
with such diverse artists as Frederic Hand, Leo Kottke, Anthony Newman,
Paco Pena, and John Williams. As a composer, Benjamin Verdery has had
many compositions performed and published in recent years. As an educator
Verdery has been the chair of the Guitar Department at the Yale University
School of Music since 1985. He also heads the Guitar Department at the
SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music. He returns for his second visit to
the Long Island Guitar Festival. Admission for this event is $15 for the
general public, $10 students and seniors.

The American Guitar Museum's Players Choice Awards featuring jazz
guitarist Jack Wilkins and special guests will be the final performance
of the festival at 1 p.m. in the Hillwood Recital Hall. Jack Wilkins has
been part of the New York jazz community for more than four decades. His
amazing technique and creative approach have inspired collaborations with
Chet Baker, Sarah Vaughan, Bob Brookmeyer, Buddy Rich and many others.
Wilkins conducts seminars and guitar clinics, both in New York and abroad.
His latest CD Bluesin', on the String Jazz label, features Wilkins in
a strong organ trio setting. Admission for this event is $15 for the general
public, $10 students and seniors.
The Long Island Guitar Festival was founded by Harris Becker, director
of the guitar program at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University.
Now in its ninth year, the mission of the Long Island Guitar Festival
is to explore the broad realm of guitar music in a local setting, with
