"The Color of Hope"
by Julianne Lovejoy

Class of 2003 - C.W. Post Campus

September 11th 2001 was the day that terror ruled our country. One year ago, our great nation endured a strike on its most recognizable icons. One year ago, our great nation watched its people die at the hands of evil. The panic, the horror, the chaos was all too real. Together we prayed. One year ago, we prayed with strangers, today let us pray with our brothers and sisters.

God of power and hope, we remember the horrors of that fateful day last September. We remember not knowing if our loved ones were safe or suffering at the command of terrorists. We wondered if our fathers, mothers, our husbands, wives, and our sons and daughters would be sent away to fight the war. We saw tears in the eyes of our heroes, our President, our police force, our firefighters, and one another, so very many tears.

We remember seeing that face, the face of Osama bin Laden and feeling rage. But we also remember seeing our nation pull together, sending supplies, volunteers, and love to wherever it was needed. We remember seeing our nation fly the red, white, and blue from every house, every car. Every American showed their pride, and honor for this nation of greatness. Every time we see that red, white, and blue we remember all those that died as Americans and died for freedom. We remember all those that are in Afghanistan fighting for America. We also remember all the innocent that have died in bombings all over the Middle East during the aftermath of September 11th. That red, white, and blue flies for every volunteer that lost their life, and reminds us that there is nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer. But there is another color that touches every tragedy, every horrific act, touches every American citizen, it is the color that burns in every candle lit in memory of September 11th , and the color is yellow.

Yellow is the color of hope. Yellow is the hope that peace times may come again. Hope that we can walk about freely in our country and not fear one another. Hope that we can make peace with our enemies. Hope that we can stay as united and as proud of our country as we are after the events of this year. We were tested as a nation. Our leadership was tested, our economy was tested, our citizens were tested. And we passed. Our foundation was shaken, and while our towers may have fallen, the rock that is America was not cracked. So God of peace and love, we ask you to watch over us, let it remain very clearly in our minds that power fueled by hatred and evil will lead to destruction. Let us realize that our power and our nation's strength lie in the unity of its people and loyalty to our righteous values. With this power, we will always stand with the greatest of strength.

God Bless each and every one of you and God Bless America. Amen.
