The following free lectures are sponsored by Long Island University's Institute for Sustainable Development. A joint endeavor of Long Island University's Southampton College and C.W. Post Campus, the Institute asks community leaders and elected politicians to rethink the way Long Island is being developed. It champions the concept of "sustainability," which promotes the preservation of a natural resource base that supports human, plant and animal life. Lecture:
"Building Environmentally Sustainable Campus Communities" by Clifford Rouder, director of the Undergraduate Nutrition Program at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. 7:30 p.m., Hunt Room (Administration Building), C.W. Post Campus, Northern Boulevard (Route 25A), Brookville. Free. Public invited. Professor Rouder's scholarly work includes an assessment of food and environmental topics in university dietetic curricula throughout the United States and studying environmentally sustainable campus communities in terms of their food and other input/output systems. His talk will include practical ideas as to how we can make our universities more sustainable. His lecture is sponsored by the Institute for Sustainable Development of Long Island University. "Global Climate Change: Is It Sustainable?" by Dr. John Stevenson, mathematics professor at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. 7:30 p.m., Hillwood Commons, room 115, C.W. Post Campus, Northern Boulevard (Route 25A), Brookville. Free. Public invited. Dr. Stevenson's extensive community involvement includes founding the Roslyn Environmental Group. His interests include space physics, environmental issues and computer science. He is currently the coordinator of the Pre-engineering program at C.W. Post. Lecture:
"Are Our Voices Being Heard? Lessons in Transportation on Long Island" by Lisa Tyson, Assistant Director of the Long Island Progressive Coalition. 7:30 p.m., Hillwood Commons, room 115, C.W. Post Campus, Northern Boulevard (Route 25A), Brookville. Free. Public invited. Ms. Tyson received her master's degree in urban and environmental studies from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She has worked on diverse projects including the Long Island 2020, a project for sustainability on Long Island, and the Campaign to Save Route 25A, which successfully lobbied the State Legislature to make the North Shore of Long Island a State designated Heritage Area. In her work she deals with women's, environmental, and social justice issues. Her lecture is sponsored by the Institute for Sustainable Development of Long Island University.
