C.W. Post Professor Wins Oliver Cromwell Cox Award
October 16, 1998 - Felix Padilla, a resident of Long Beach, NY and a
professor sociology at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University,
was recently awarded the Oliver Cromwell Cox Award for his 1997 book, "The
Struggle of Latino/Latina University Students in Search of a Liberating
Education," which depicts the unique challenges faced by Latino/a
students in the world of higher education. The award is given annually
by the American Sociological Association to books which make contributions
to th critical understanding of social inequality while working, at the
same time, toward social justice.
Originally from Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, Dr. Padilla is founder of the
Latino Studies Journal, which publishes articles and manuscripts on all
aspects of the experiences of Latino/a people. The Journal recognizes and
honors the richness and diversity of the Latino/a world and provides a
forum for the expression of both individual cultural and, at times, all-encompassing,
universal Latino/a thought and action.
Internationally recognized for his scholarship in the areas of Latino/a
studies and critical education, Dr. Padilla is the author of five major
books on the Latino/a experience in the United States, including "The
Gang as an American Enterprise" (1992). He has written a dozen journal
articles on topics such as Puerto Rican, Mexican American and Cuban relations;
the sociology of Latino culture and identity; the sociology of salsa music;
and Latino/a youth gangs.
