The Catholic Campus Parish at the C.W. Post Campus
of Long Island University recently honored Theresa Mall Mullarkey with the
Mary M. Lai Model of Faith Award.
A Locust Valley, N.Y. resident, Theresa Mullarkey has served as chancellor
of the C.W. Post Campus in Brookville since 1993. She also is a member of
the Long Island University Board of Trustees and a parishioner at St. Paul
the Apostle R.C. Church in Brookville.
For an annual salary of only one dollar, Mrs. Mullarkey acts as a liaison
between C.W. Post faculty, staff and students, the Long Island University
Board of Trustees, and the local community. She helps in fund-raising efforts
and is currently overseeing $1.7 million in renovations of Lorber Hall,
an historic mansion on campus. She also is a member of the planning committee
for C.W. Post's new $11 million dollar recreation center. Mrs. Mullarkey
serves as chairman of the C.W. Post Council of Overseers, a group of local
residents and alumni who help raise scholarships for deserving students.
The Mary M. Lai Model of Faith Award named for Long Island University's
Vice President for Finance and Treasurer is presented annually to
an individual who exemplifies Catholic ideals of devotion, compassion, understanding,
healing and commitment, and successfully incorporates these ideals into
both professional and personal life. A devout Roman Catholic who attends
mass daily, Mary Lai has served as the chief financial officer for Long
Island University for more than 50 years.
At a communion brunch on February 9, 1997 Mrs. Lai praised Mrs. Mullarkey's
dedication to Long Island University. "She is a gracious, compassionate
and beautiful woman of faith who goes the extra mile for students, faculty
and staff." Mrs. Lai presented the award along with Father Ted Brown,
C.W. Post's Catholic chaplain.
