Hillwood Art Museum Awarded Federal Grant

October 1998 - To ensure that the next generation can enjoy a culturally rich and diverse array of prominent artwork, the Hillwood Art Museum at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville was recently awarded a 1998 Conservation Assessment Program (CAP) grant by The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and Heritage Preservation.

The $3,400 grant funded an October 8 and 9, 1998 site visit by a professional conservator who evaluated the museum's current collection care policies, helped develop long-range conservation plans and identified specific conservation needs.

"The grant included a critical study of our methods of preservation, cataloging and maintaining the Long Island University Permanent Art Collection, which has more than 3,000 important pieces," said Barry Stern, Director of the Hillwood Art Museum. "It will also allow future generations to benefit from the artistic expressions of so many talented painters, sculptors and designers who have exhibited at Hillwood."

CAP provides funds to small- and medium-sized museums for a general conservation survey, which consists of a broad study of the policies, procedures, and environmental condition affecting the care and preservation of collections and sites.

"Hillwood Art Museum is joining a growing number of museums throughout the United States that are learning to better care for their collections so they will be available for future generations," explained Larry Reger, president of Heritage Preservation.

Hillwood Art Museum is located in Hillwood Commons on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, Northern Boulevard (Route 25A), Brookville.
